Elemi is a soft, fragrant oleoresin obtained from the trunk of Canarium luzonicum trees, and elemi essential oil is extracted from this oleoresin. For over 100 years the name ‘elemi’ was used as a collective term for a number of oleoresins derived from several botanical species and geographical origins. Vetiver essential oil is extracted from the roots of a grass known as Vetiveria zizanoides which belongs to the same botanical family as lemongrass, citronella and palmarosa. This plant has been appreciated for its diverse range of useful applications since records began, and in some countries such as India its role as a perfume may even precede that of the ubiquitous rose.
