I don’t know about you, but I’m having problems trying to get back into a regular routine, let alone work towards the goals I was working towards way back in 2020! As with most things in life, the natural and gentle approach really is the best when it comes this type of journey.

Thankfully there is one simple thing you can do to ensure you possess the necessary get-up-and-go you need to get everything done that you promised you would do during this year – simply use your essential oils to improve your mental focus!

The science bit

Essential oils are one of the most powerful tools you can employ as part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle since they have the ability to not only improve the health of our bodies, but our emotions too. Scientist have proven that essential oils have an influence on the Limbic System in the brain, and this part of the brain controls the complex chemistry of our emotions.

Research has also shown that all of our emotions are the result of neurochemicals such as noradrenaline and serotonin being released into the bloodstream, and mood changes are believed to be a result of these influences. This is how essential oils can help to lift up our spirits when we are down in the dumps, or help to calm anger and frustration on stressful days.

So it’s hardly surprising that essential oils can also be used to maintain a positive attitude and focus the mind, keeping us firmly on track towards achieving our goals in life. Remember that holding a negative attitude will undermine our confidence, determination and willpower, eventually robbing us of our determination to get things done. So we need focus and determination at all times when we have specific goals in mind, and essential oils can help us obtain this.

The best essential oils for mental focus

Several essential oils can help improve your mental focus, and when they are blended together they can be even more effective than when used individually. The list in the sidebar lists the essential oils most commonly used to strengthen resolve while improving clarity and focus of mind.

To get the best results you should use essential oils that have both an energising action on the body and an uplifting effect on the mind too. Quite a few essential oils have these therapeutic properties, and remember that combining them can make the results even more effective.

Here are some of the essential oils I’ve found the most effective for improving mental focus;-

Basil Sweet
This essential oil has a powerful effect on the nervous system. Basil is unsurpassed at bringing strength of mind, clarity and focus, especially when you are so mentally exhausted or stressed-out that you just can’t think clearly. Basil essential oil aids concentration, especially when trying to absorb new information, making it the perfect essential oil to bring focus. If you use only one essential oil to improve your mental clarity, it should be basil.

Essential oils for focus

Bergamot essential oil
Bergamot oil has a refreshing and uplifting action that is ideal for defeating negative emotions while strengthening determination and willpower. These attributes are absolutely necessary when focusing your attention on a specific goal, so bergamot makes a great addition to your focus oil blends.

Cardamon essential oil
Although this essential oil is traditionally used for treating digestive problems, it also has a soothing, yet stimulating and cleansing action which is excellent for promoting mental clarity and focus. Combine cardamon essential oil with grapefruit and basil essential oils for a really powerful synergistic blend that will really concentrate your mental focus.

Grapefruit essential oil
On the emotional system grapefruit excels with a cleansing and energising action that really lifts the spirits if you’re feeling down or suffering for nervous exhaustion and depressive states. Grapefruit is another essential oil that will help to strengthen your resolve and bring clarity of mind.

Rosemary essential oil
The herb rosemary has been used for centuries as a symbol of remembrance because it was reputed to strengthen the memory, – which is ideal for improving mental focus. Inhaling rosemary essential oil can be like a ray of sunshine bringing hope and strength to those who have become disheartened and lost their direction in life. Another ideal component in blends to improve mental clarity. Avoid use of this oil if you are pregnant.

Vetiver essential oil
The primary properties of this unique essential oil could be described as strengthening, nurturing and revitalizing. Vetiver is a base note that brings stability and strength to those who feel damaged by life’s circumstances and adversities, acting as a ‘grounding’ agent. Vetiver essential oil has the ability to focus the mind and elicit concentration wherever endurance is required, making it a valuable addition to your ‘focus blends’. This oil has a very strong aroma, so a little goes a very long way.

You can use your essential oils in a variety of ways, but for the purpose of strengthening mental focus it’s hard to beat the effects of using them in an aromatherapy diffuser. If you prefer, you can use them in a massage blend or add them to your morning bath to set you up for the day, whatever works for you. Use these oils in as many different ways as you can to get the best results.

If you choose to include peppermint essential oil in a bath be sure to use no more than 2 drops, and be sure to agitate the water really well and use a Bath Dispersant to dissolve the oils safely into the water to avoid irritating your skin.
