5 Essential Oils To Energise Your Mind & Body

Here are 5 energising essentials to energise you this SpringIt’s quite common to experience a noticeable drop in your energy levels as winter has drawn to a close and spring has arrived.

Totally understandable, since the winter weather can be quite challenging and many people feel depleted at the end of the ordeal. If this is you, rest assured you are not on your own!

The shorter days of winter mean that you have seen much less sunlight than usual, and these darker days affects your body’s circadian rhythm. This change causes your body to produce more of the sleep hormone, melatonin, and before you know it you’re sliding gradually into hibernation mode. Less sun also means that your vitamin D levels are also reduced, leading to lower energy levels and mood swings. Put these two influences together and it’s easy to see why your energy levels are depleted long before spring arrives.

In tune with nature

These facts demonstrate the importance of harmonising our bodies with the seasons if we want to enjoy good health, all year round. Symbolically, spring represents revitalisation, renewal and rebirth, and it was understood long ago about the importance and benefits of preparation in readiness for the growth of all things both material and spiritual. Spring will officially arrive on 20th March, so let’s take advantage of the approaching changes, both seasonally and emotionally.

Aromatherapy can be used effectively to help renew vitality, restore the balance to your body’s efficiency, and bring you closer to nature. Seasonally, this is the perfect time of year to make this type of holistic alignment, and your essential oils will be the fuel to help you reach escape velocity and get you up from that couch!

Energising essential oils

Grapefruit – This is one of the most refreshing and reviving of all essential oils, plus it blends so easily with virtually all other essential oils (and absolutes) to add a lovely fresh, citrussy top note. Grapefruit essential oil imparts a cleansing and energising effect on the emotional system that really lifts the spirits when you’re feeling down or exhausted. It’s the perfect pick-me-up oil when mixed in a blend of 2 drops grapefruit, 1 drop of cardamon, and 1drop of bergamot.

Basil – Here’s an essential oil that is unsurpassed at bringing strength of mind and clarity to those who have pushed themselves hard and become exhausted physically and mentally, or are suffering from a lack of energy, stress, and a lack of focus. Basil essential oil works particularly well with bergamot, geranium, orange sweet, peppermint, pine and rosemary to quickly get your mojo working again. For a lovely spring-like floral aroma indoors, add 2 drops of basil, 1 drop of geranium, and one drop of lavender to your diffuser and enjoy the enlivening and energising boost it delivers.

Pine – The aroma of pine essential oil always brings invokes memories or visions of walking through beautiful alpine forests with clean, unpolluted fresh air. This alone is good enough reason to use pine oil, but the powerful therapeutic effects will also empower you psychologically, invoking the energy of spring renewal. Pine essential oil blends well with all citrus oils so you can make good use of their combined energising qualities too, while creating endless fragrant variations. Try adding 2 drops of pine, 1 drop of grapefruit, and 1 drop of peppermint to your aromatherapy diffuser to put a fresh breath of spring in the air around your home and boost your energy levels.

Orange – Sweet orange essential oil creates a cheering, warm and sunny atmosphere at any time of year, but it seems really appropriate to symbolise the arrival of spring. It is uplifting and energising to the body, yet calming and soothing to the mind. If this oil was a song, it would be singing, ‘Here comes the sun . . .’!

Black Pepper – This is a stimulating oil that brings an invigorating and heating energy to any purpose it is used, and is especially good at delivering a boost to those suffering from lethargy, fatigue and exhaustion. Black pepper essential oil stimulates the production of healthy red blood cells which then carry more oxygen to vital organs and muscles – the perfect therapeutic property to energise you from head to toe. This essential oil is a base note, so it blends perfectly with the other oils here to create a powerful, stimulating and strengthening blend.

Other energising oils that you put to use effectively to revitalise and energise your jaded energy levels include; bergamot, eucalyptus lemon, juniper berry, lemon, lemongrass, lime, peppermint, rosemary and spearmint. Just a few drops of any of these essential oils added to an aromatherapy diffuser will release those invigorating aromatic molecules into the air around you, and help get you motivated and moving when you are feeling depleted after the long, dreary winter.
