Prevent Winter Skin Damage

The first few weeks of January here in the U.K. have seen record levels of rainfall, plus cold winds blowing from the polar regions, causing a sharp fall in temperature. And when temperatures fall like this, so does the relative humidity of the air causing it to strip away up to 25% of your skin’s moisture. This is why your skin becomes drier and more sensitive during the colder winter weather, and can eventually lead to a flaky, blotchy complexion, or even cracks in your skin.

Since this type of weather is likely to be with us for several months it is vitally important that you take action now to protect your skin from its drying, damaging effects. That’s because taking preventative action now is much better than having to try and nurse your precious skin back to health after neglecting it during the winter months. Prevention is always better than cure, and there is no better way to prevent winter skin damage than by using your versatile and natural aromatherapy oils!

Protective carrier oils

Aromatherapy carrier oils are ideal to help keep your skin soft and supple when the colder weather sets in – even without adding any essential oils! They are especially recommended for the treatment of dry, sensitive or mature skin that is susceptible to the harsh winter environment, and can be blended together just as you would your essential oils. Simply choose 2 or 3 oils according to the therapeutic properties that you require.
These natural, cold-pressed vegetable oils are free from the harsh chemicals commonly found in products today, plus they are convenient and versatile. They are a perfect form of natural skincare protection because certain carrier oils contain special natural ingredients that are very similar to sebum, your skins own natural moisturising agent.

Essential protection

To supercharge your aromatherapy winter protection, add some power-packed essential oils to a healing and rejuvenating carrier oil such as argan, calendula, jojoba, moringa or rosehip, since the correct essential oils can actually help to reverse the damage you may have already suffered. Roman chamomile, frankincense, geranium, helichrysum, lavender, neroli, palmarosa, rose, and sandalwood essential oils are the best essential oils to repair, moisturise and maintain the condition of your skin throughout the harsh winter weather conditions.

Rebalance your skin

The aggressive winter weather can often disrupt the skin’s natural balance, leading to excessive oiliness or dryness. If your skin becomes unusually oily, simply blend essential oils of lemon, juniper berry or cypress together with geranium in a light carrier oil such as peach kernel to balance your over-active sebaceous glands. Alternatively, if your skin has become very dry and flaky, combine sandalwood, frankincense and myrrh in jojoba carrier oil and apply it for an intensive overnight treatment.
